The success and prosperity of a nation depend upon the health of its citizens. Without sound physical and mental health, people cannot realise their potential. A fully developed country needs a healthcare system which promotes wellbeing in all its aspects: prevention, therapy, research and development. Guided by His Highness the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, a major reform program is underway. With the endorsement of her husband, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah is improving the standards of wellbeing and healthcare in many areas. She is responding to needs that resulted from Qatar's increasing population and rapid developments in the field of medicine. Her Highness established the Shafallah Center in collaboration with Qatar Foundation, to provide health and learning support for children with special needs. Furthermore, Qatar Establishment for Care of the Elderly provides health and social support for senior citizens in need, and a rehabilitation centre offers a unique facility for young people with addiction problems.
Health education claims an important share of Her Highness's work. Organizations such as the Qatar Diabetes Association are promoting healthy lifestyles throughout the community. Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and the Sidra Medical and Research Center project are working to turn Qatar into one of the world's advanced centers for medical research.
