Care for the environment is central to Qatar's development. Islamic doctrines speak of nature as a divine gift, and of humanity's need to protect it. Only people who love and respect their environment are capable of loving and respecting each other. And without a protected environment, humans will not be healthy themselves.
Over the last century, the environment has become an important issue. Industrialization and mineral extraction threatened wildlife, vegetation, land and water. Urbanisation made people increasingly out of touch with the natural world and its importance.
The future development of Qatar depends upon care for the environment. Educating individuals to appreciate the natural world motivates them to protect it as well. Care for the environment additionally creates regional and international cooperation between nations dedicated to the preserving and developing their natural resources.
In this respect, "A Flower Each Spring", is a program initiated by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah, to help make this vision a reality. The project teaches young people to enjoy and learn about Qatar's indigenous flora. Field trips are organised to experience nature first hand, and give the knowledge they can relay to other generations. |
